There are also no repercussions for bad legislation. A significantly safer alternative would be highly localized monarchism, where the monarch isn't incredibly powerful but is given great scrutiny because he is the one with the most power, and thus also the most responsibility. In a monarchy, you only need to kill one person and leadership changes. In a democracy you either: kill as many people that participates in politics and disagrees with you as you can OR wait a very long time for people to listen to you.
