Just found out Frank Herbert's son is more of a hack that I thought. He ruined the Butlerian Jihad not just by linking the origins to the main houses from his father's books (ridiculous to think power and organization won't change for 10,000 years), but also by making a wamen protagonist named "Butler". Herbert's idea for the name came from the author of a satirical work in the 1800s about machines evolving. Total hack prequels level! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vC6xwis64sA
Why Is It Called The "Butlerian" Jihad?
In this video we explore the true meaning behind Dune's Butlerian Jihad, as well as why Frank Herbert chose it. In addition, we examine one of the oldest war...

When I read the Dune books, I really didn't feel like the Butlerian Jihad thing was all that well explained to be honest. It's implausible in-universe, not very fleshed out, nor very relevant apart from being the reason for some of the cool shit Herbert wanted to put in. And in later books the core tenet is broken without fanfare or consequence. Still, the original idea is interesting. I think this "domestication of man" is happening even without the intelligent machines. I wonder when Dune fans started to turn on Brian Herbert. Did they always not like the first sequel he did?

I read the first sequel as soon as it came out and I immediately hated it. The hack-ness of the whole thing was hideously distasteful. This was before Star Wars was despoiled and dishonored; in some ways it was a prequel to that. It was, in every way, simply an artifact of the soulless lack of imagination of the money people who run things. "yeah, get Frank Herbert's kid to write prequels, these assholes will buy anything." Frank Herbert was a yid, but he could write.

>Frank Herbert was a yid Apparently he put Jews in chapterhouse dune (lmfao) but I can't find anything that says he himself was jewish.

imagine being handed the framework of some really original, and still not tired even though it’s 60 years old, sci-fi and punting it away to go for the most derivative and slay queen angles for your story telling that retroactively make the original books worse
