You know, I just realized something. Just like how you always heard people be like "I use Linux for daily computing and Windows for games", I think we're going to see an influx of people being like "I use Plan 9 for daily computing and Linux for games" over the next year or two. Kind of hard to believe we've come this far honestly

allison - https://blob.cat/users/allison Already doing this to some extent with OpenBSD; I'm using it for most daily tasks. Linux is for games (mostly since my Linux box is higher-specced than the OpenBSD one, not because of OS limitations) and Zig programming (since it doesn't run on OpenBSD yet), and Windows for whatever exotic stuff that can't be done on those two.- - - - -I'd like to try other OSes but most of them lacks JS-capable browsers and some small but important QoL features... :02lurk: (Haiku comes very close but last time I checked it still seem to lack the option of encrypting the drive or even just putting a lock screen password)

@tengumatingpress@poa.st @happymonkey@poa.st He was interested in using the Plan 9 compilers for OpenBSD so he could drop gcc but he *despised* the Lucent license due to the arbitration clauses and the fact that it defers to United States law.

@happymonkey@poa.st @allison@blob.cat plan 9 is basically what multics was supposed to be. multics was supposed to be the successor to unix for time sharing systems back in the day. unix is such a pile of shit that even its creators admitted it's an operating system for niggers when it was relatively new. plan 9 is still inferior to other options like nonstop, openvms, and the microkernels of the l4 family. that all said i do want to try inferno clusters out if i can make it work from userspace on linux or something since it has no drivers

@AngryHortlerNoises@poa.st @happymonkey@poa.st You have your timeline backwards, Unix postdates Multics. Also, when you said that Nonstop and OpenVMS are superior, do you have experience with either? No pressure, just curious.
Reply to @[email protected]
@psiie@mstdn.social @allison@blob.cat Plan9 is an operating system created by Bell Labs after UNIX, built on lessons learned from creating UNIX. I have't yet played around with it myself, but some things that are noteworthy about it is that resources can be transparently distributed across the network. On Unix-like systems, individual process can easily have their own environment variables. Plan9 extends this idea, so that individual processes have their own view of the whole file system. The code is also incredibly lean and readable for how featureful it is.

@allison@blob.cat @happymonkey@poa.st "You have your timeline backwards, Unix postdates Multics." yes but it wasn't doable on the hardware of the era so they basically scrapped it in favor of unix. that's where the name unix came from. it's castrated multics lmao "Also, when you said that Nonstop and OpenVMS are superior, do you have experience with either?" not as much with nonstop but i have a fair amount of experience with openvms cluster admin. it has file versioning built into the base system and compute resources are pretty much transparent across clusters. it aged like $500 wine while unix aged like unrefrigerated milk tbh
