@lucy@netzsphaere.xyz @tyil@fedi.tyil.nl The current state of Linux made me realize that BSD might not be a bad idea if things continue on the same path as it was in the last ~5 years.

@lucy@netzsphaere.xyz @tyil@fedi.tyil.nl @phnt@fluffytail.org Even something like CRUX beats out Gentoo in terms of minimalism. They're still using a traditional tarball based package manager there iirc.

@lucy@netzsphaere.xyz @tyil@fedi.tyil.nl I've been pretty happy with OpenBSD and FreeBSD on servers even though my first choice for servers is unironically RHEL/Alma. I didn't try BSDs as my main system for a long time. Mostly because I don't want to reinstall my 6 year old Arch (now Artix) install.

@phnt@fluffytail.org @tyil@fedi.tyil.nl @lucy@netzsphaere.xyz It's not Unix if you aren't paranoid about filth piling up and wanting to reinstall every 6 months.

@lucy@netzsphaere.xyz @phnt@fluffytail.org @tyil@fedi.tyil.nl weren't they also the ones who don't understand that if multiple prohects have a security issue they should work together and as such don't get informed about shit anymore?

@snacks@netzsphaere.xyz @tyil@fedi.tyil.nl @phnt@fluffytail.org @lucy@netzsphaere.xyz are you thinking of freebsd? openbsd is ran by friends who have a routine when maintaining it, the project seems well organized
replyReply to @[email protected]
@snacks@netzsphaere.xyz @lucy@netzsphaere.xyz @phnt@fluffytail.org Theo's reasoning is mostly "here is a base install that can't do anything at all. This is security. Anything else you install is not our fault therefore it is not a _real_ security issue in OpenBSD"

@nyanide@lab.nyanide.com @tyil@fedi.tyil.nl @phnt@fluffytail.org @lucy@netzsphaere.xyz no, iirc they just pushed fixes for bugs before agreed dates with other devs and as such disclosed the vuln publicly

@snacks@netzsphaere.xyz @tyil@fedi.tyil.nl @phnt@fluffytail.org @lucy@netzsphaere.xyz the system is fully functional out of the gate, obviously fucking around with configurations to purposefully weaken defenses in stuff like openssh is your fault. the openbsd team also can't really be held responsible for what you do inside other programs

@snacks @tyil @lucy Yes, they leaked Spectre/Meltdown before the NDA lift and that made openwall ban them for a few months.

@nyanide@lab.nyanide.com @tyil@fedi.tyil.nl @phnt@fluffytail.org @lucy@netzsphaere.xyz yeah, but other projects try to minimize the impact of vulnerabilites in software running on top like with selinux while openbsd just says it's safe because the base install is safe

@phnt@fluffytail.org @tyil@fedi.tyil.nl @lucy@netzsphaere.xyz @snacks@netzsphaere.xyz major blunder indeed. but this was also nearly 10 years ago and that's more than enough time to learn from what happened

replyReply to @[email protected]
@tyil@fedi.tyil.nl @snacks@netzsphaere.xyz @phnt@fluffytail.org @lucy@netzsphaere.xyz The base install of "Open"BSD contains quite a lot of proprietary software, thus it appears that there is only an illusion of security, as well nobody actually uses it (even its own developers don't use macos instead and only ever use it in a VM), therefore nobody finds the security vulnerabilities.
