I used to walk off on the job when I was put in a position to not be able to resolve the situation by policy and quitting time rolled around. I got called to the carpet over it a couple of times and said the policy was impossible and I’d have been obligated to be on the bridge for three months straight if I’d stayed until the policy were satisfied because of a change freeze. Fire me if you want. They backed down immediately. If you were wondering it was a malfunctioning nonproduction resource for a “critical” category of server leading into a freeze for the holiday season. It wasn’t technically even in nonproduction service yet and its completion wouldn’t be permitted until mid January at the end of a freeze but some asshole added it to the alerts and we weren’t allowed to fix that list because change freeze.
