You mostly play with pubs when you need to grind that one specific monster and feel like doing it faster I think lol

@striker@pleroma.striker.net.eu.org modded? Online is a pretty big part of monster hunter but I played some of the older games completly alone and still had fun. Newer ones have the advantage of cats/dogs AI assitants.
