You just had to be there.

@Echigo@varishangout.net Never heard of it, was it good?

@VTArgyle@varishangout.net It was pretty decent for only lasting a year. Was a free to play game only on PS4 that got taken down from 2016 to 2017. The devs said they were unable to reach a sustainable level for the game. There were a couple free to play games on the PS4 that never really got the time to shine despite how good they were. Another one was The Tomorrow Children.

@Echigo@varishangout.net I'll one up you

@Tamamo@varishangout.net @Echigo@varishangout.net Oh hey, I vaguely remember this one

@Tamamo@varishangout.net Personally I think it’s because Qurare came out too early. It was a gacha game so if it maybe released a year or so later or lived a little longer it could’ve gained more traction, especially during the pandemic.

@Tamamo@varishangout.net Idk about this game but I assume it had the same fate of only surviving for a year.

@Echigo@varishangout.net Destiny of Spirits was a Vita exclusive gacha game from 2014. The gimmick was that it used the Vita's GPS to get unique units from real live locations and you could trade the units with other people.

@Tamamo@varishangout.net So basically, it was Pokemon Go before PGO became a thing?
Reply to @[email protected]
@Echigo@varishangout.net Yeah kinda. The units were based of the mythology of the place you were at.

@Tamamo@varishangout.net Oh that’s a cool idea. Also idk if this means anything noteworthy, but the publishers of Qurare were Smilegate Megaport. They also published Epic Seven and Crossfire.

@Echigo@varishangout.net DoS was developed by Sony's Japan Studio and got EoS'd after a year. It probably would have done decently if they ported it to smartphone and expanded on the idea but alas. Thanks soyny.

@Tamamo@varishangout.net Yeah, Soyny was likely a factor in these smaller games not popping off.

@Tamamo@varishangout.net I just checked and Qurare is still on the PS4 servers, tho of course isn’t able to be played. Stops on the loading screen and says there’s a network error. My question is why do they still let you download it?
Reply to @[email protected]
@Echigo@varishangout.net Like you said, they practically had the blueprint of PGO in their hands long before PGO was a thing. But this was around the same time soyny started westernising and treating Japan Studio like shit.

@Tamamo@varishangout.net @Echigo@varishangout.net Why did they even decide to make it a Vita game? 3G models of Vita ended production in 2013 and public WiFi was nowhere near good enough to reasonably keep a connection going with the VIta's godawful connection quality. Having to move around with the Vita's GPS services and stay connected to the internet for gacha to work seems like it was destined to fail.

@Iffine@varishangout.net @Echigo@varishangout.net My guess it was in development before they axed the 3G models. The 3G model doomed to fail anyhow though. These days its normal to get a second simcard for your tablet or whatever but back then mobile internet was still pretty pricy. I guess you could have tethered your Vita to your smartphone's internet but...

@Iffine@varishangout.net @Echigo@varishangout.net Funny enough the 3G units are pretty wanted these days because the 3G module is actually a separate board that you can take out and swap for an microSD card board that can act as internal storage if you hack the firmware.

@Tamamo@varishangout.net @Echigo@varishangout.net Yeah. It's not that big of a deal though without one. SD2Vita cards are a pretty nice alternative and what I've got. Stops the user from using cartridges, but at the same time being able to put up to at least 1TB of storage in the Vita is more than a good tradeoff (though I've only ever seen one user do such an insane thing as buy a 1TB MicroSD for his Vita).
