Technically, all wolves / canids can be domesticated. A forest dog (wolf) isn't that different from a house wolf (dog).

Yuki fits the description of "La Bête du Gévaudan" a massive wolf the terrorized the French countryside from between 1764 and 1767.
At that time it was in vogue for the French nobility to import "exotic pets" such as Lions, Panthers and hybrid animals.

I really want to pet a wolf and hang out with one for a bit. Maybe I should take the family to one of those wolf rescues.

You can do that. I visited this place DECADES ago, and there is more. Those wolfs are tamed but NOT domesticated, so you must accept THEIR rules.

Yeah that's what I want to see, thanks! I don't make it to that part of the country too often lately, but I'll look into what next summer looks like for travel or another local option.

I have a friend who drags me around for all sorts of these things, and she paid money to sit with the pack. Again, the pack had a handler, and told her to behave or the pack gets exited and becomes unpredictable.
Wolfs are highly social and hierarchical creatures, so they actually crave interaction. But they are not domesticated, which means they are not going to accept humans as part of their pack.
The wild wolfs are loaded with all sorts of bugs and disease-carry creatures, its "mother nature", in all her fucking genocidal glory.

Wolfs fascinate me. The idea of this giant bear-like dog is just so neat. Same with big cats. I love going to the zoo and seeing them play.

Wolfs are small, compared to some dogs. What makes them dog-killer is they are in a pack, and they have their leader-related unique strategy to deal with issues.
You cannot under-estimate a wolf-pack. They are equipped to deal with solitary predators of all makes and sizes, including bears.

Doesn't mean it wouldn't be nice to exprience

Untamed nature is very uninviting. I suspect dogs are an exception but even cats are a bitch and it just goes downhill from there. Try to domesticate a roach and you will see what I mean.

@FourOh-LLC@pkteerium.xyz @grillchen@brotka.st @kaia@brotka.st @BowsacNoodle@poa.st @MelGibsonafter4Beers@poa.st Dogs, cats, horses, and oxen all simply shared the truth of being helpful for humans to keep around. In turn the animals stayed with humans because we offered them food and shelter.
Dogs and Cats are the descendents of the working creatures we tamed for work. That we keep them as pets nowadays despite the lessened need for their jobs is simply because our descendents took them as pets before us, and their descendents before them. We know they are animals compatible with human companionship and give it to them because they are cute.
Horses and Oxen too to a lesser degree as well, but they're not as cute or efficient to keep around as the smaller animals who have become the staple pet.

@FourOh-LLC@pkteerium.xyz @grillchen@brotka.st @kaia@brotka.st @BowsacNoodle@poa.st @MelGibsonafter4Beers@poa.st I mean yeah, the thought I put out loud is that the creature we domesticated were ones that served a purpose as animal companions. The prototype species of Dogs were assistants to the hunt, for Cats they were pest control specialists, Horses were transportation, and Oxen were that and to help till fields. Animals that are simply tame had nothing to offer us, and the best we offered was neutrality in return.

Hard labor and / or public capital punishment for animal abusers.
You'd be surprised how many "normal" people would enthusiastically support such policies.

Just so we understand how much of an absolute madman Hannibal Barca actually was, witnessing a war elephant in 181 BC would be like watching Hamas arrive at an Israeli music festival on dragons instead of paragliders in today's world.
