Remember when Apple tried to patent the concept of the rectangle with rounded corners, to shut everyone else out of the cell phone market? And then Samsung threatened to stop making screens for Apple in retaliation? I wonder if Nokia or Microsoft also threatened to withhold patent licensing, as well...

More like you have to be very careful about the Japanese market. I have never heard _anything_ good about its patent and legal systems (on the criminal side, it's an incompetent police state), and this is just another black mark against both, as well as having a footprint in Japan where the Palworld studio is based.

I don't like the practice of patenting a game mechanic (not a particular way to implement a gimmick, but the gimmick itself).
Other examples include the Sanity system from Eternal Darkness or the Nemesis system from Shadow of Mordor. Those were interesting ideas that could (and should) have been available to other people who wanted to find a way to incorporate them into their games.

@smugumin@poa.st Allowing the ownership of general ideas or vague implementations completely goes against any sane purpose of IP.
Video games were at their best when everyone was ripping everyone else's ideas off and refining them.
All this gives pirates the moral high-ground to avoid funding this behavior and waters everything down so it's not even worth pirating in the first place.
