peak isekai slop

@bowlingc@varishangout.net Y'know I've always wondered if the praise people gave to SAO later on was actually worth it. I doubt I'd ever go back to watch it again after the rather bitter taste of trying to watch the first 2 seasons, but I did hear quite a few people thinking that later arcs have much better writing. At the very least it's nice to see Kirito get his ass handed to him in a natural way that isn't just "you need to be more edgy so you can edge-lord all over the place and win fights by default."

@Iffine@varishangout.net This is SAO Progressive it's a retelling but through asuna point of view and fixes the story

@Iffine@varishangout.net You should definitely give it a shot if you loved the first couple episodes of Sao before the terrible ending and plot holes

@bowlingc@varishangout.net
Interesting. Honestly I think SAO was made bitter for me once the first party of Kirito's died, underdeveloped of characters as they were, a clear tone setter that things will just happen so Kirito can be as much of a main character as possible. If SAO Progressive focuses less on the pity party or at least re-contextualizes them in a way to make more sense, it'd be somewhat worth a shot I guess.

@Iffine@varishangout.net @bowlingc@varishangout.net I've tried watching it but it was obvious the writer never ever played an MMO is his live.

@Tamamo@varishangout.net @Iffine@varishangout.net I can't speak to that I don't play MMOs but the progressive movies are definitely a step up
Reply to @[email protected]
@Tamamo@varishangout.net @bowlingc@varishangout.net Fair. I don't give MMO fantasies too much shit over this since I'll just live with suspension of disbelief, but yeah it can be hard when almost every episode tested said suspension. It's also much easier to deal with when the series isn't taking its own mechanics too seriously, such as BOFURI which understands it's all extremely unrealistic and instead chooses to have fun with that fact. Though if you really wanted an MMO story with clear real inspiration from MMOs, there's always .hack. Hard to beat a series that had a genuine MMO release using all the mechanics of the main game.

@Iffine@varishangout.net They're not there because asuna wasn't there at that point

@Iffine@varishangout.net @Tamamo@varishangout.net from what I've seen kirko isn't overpowered but I've only watched the first movie
Reply to @[email protected]
@bowlingc@varishangout.net @Iffine@varishangout.net The SAO creator is westpilled though, I'd rather not watch the same slop but from the perspective of a westpilled Asuna.

@Immahnoob@varishangout.net @Iffine@varishangout.net I think I know what you're talking about but didn't that happen in like 2017 and he did nothing he said he was going to do
Reply to @[email protected]
@bowlingc@varishangout.net That's a decent way to go about it. Knew they both had very minimal interactions for quite a while, but somewhat expected it to still be retold and given some focus because Kirito made such a big deal out of it.
Reply to @[email protected]
@bowlingc@varishangout.net @Iffine@varishangout.net The fact he made Asuna the main character is enough for me considering his language back then.
Reply to @[email protected]
@Immahnoob@varishangout.net @Iffine@varishangout.net I think he said he was going to tone down the rape but in his next anime he put more into it
Reply to @[email protected]
@bowlingc@varishangout.net the thing that really killed sao for me back then was the ntr arc
Reply to @[email protected]
@rainignterror1080p@varishangout.net the progressive light novel goes to floor 100 instead of stopping at 50 and having that weird ark
Reply to @[email protected]
@bowlingc@varishangout.net @Immahnoob@varishangout.net Would prefer he did actually tone down the rape a bit, if anything had to be toned down. Felt like an annoying overly extreme way to make the series more dark. The laundry list of things Kirito has had to deal with in a 2 year span shouldn't need to be padded out for false depth. Like he was some OC on a fanfiction site who needed to have too much justification for harming another human, since the author doesn't want him to be bad in any way.

@Immahnoob@varishangout.net @Iffine@varishangout.net the light novel released in 2012 I doubt any modern politics had any influence on asuna being the protagonist
Reply to @[email protected]
@Iffine@varishangout.net @Immahnoob@varishangout.net I agree every heroine he had to save had something to do with rape lol
Reply to @[email protected]
@rainignterror1080p@varishangout.net @bowlingc@varishangout.net >ntr arc they are basically in every mainline SAO sequel now and get more and more rapey. dropped the one with the (second) sinon one
its just cheap emotion baiting

@DarkMahesvara@varishangout.net @bowlingc@varishangout.net i mean i saw the sinon one and i thought he was a male feminist but i didn't watch anything after that

@bowlingc@varishangout.net @Immahnoob@varishangout.net Funnily enough I think this alone is why SAO Alternative was such a refreshing and solid series. Take a world that has some decent fundamentals and ideas, and then remove the guy who somehow creates a singularity of rape and murder victims to surround himself with.

@DarkMahesvara@varishangout.net @rainignterror1080p@varishangout.net @bowlingc@varishangout.net I played some SAO game on the Vita and one of the girls sob story was that she was dying of AIDS. ...I was laughing my ass off. It was so forced.

@Iffine@varishangout.net @bowlingc@varishangout.net @Immahnoob@varishangout.net >guy who somehow creates a singularity of rape and murder victims to surround himself sounds kinda cool ngl, as if simply by existing he causes women to get raped

@bowlingc@varishangout.net @Iffine@varishangout.net Doubt the anime is a one-to-one rendition of it.
Reply to @[email protected]
@Iffine@varishangout.net @bowlingc@varishangout.net well back then it was before the isekai boom so for today's standards its prob mid. progressive is much better because it focuses on the tower climbing which is the best part. either way it for sure isn't nearly as good as mushoku tensei.

@PunishedLenny3@varishangout.net @Iffine@varishangout.net @bowlingc@varishangout.net The only way Kirito can be better is if the shit that actually happened around him was more interesting and he didn't have to be the most basic bitch to solve anything.
Reply to @[email protected]
@PunishedLenny3@varishangout.net @Immahnoob@varishangout.net @bowlingc@varishangout.net I am fully of the belief that if Kirito died in the world of SAO, the rape statistic in their world would go down at least 5%. Also VRMMOs would have far less serial killers in them.

@bowlingc@varishangout.net @Iffine@varishangout.net Bro, not even Asuna's perspective can save this even if it's not westpilled. I forgot about the stupid cancer bitch that made Kirito irrelevant until now, but that's where I stopped watching SAO related garbage.

@Tamamo@varishangout.net @rainignterror1080p@varishangout.net @DarkMahesvara@varishangout.net @bowlingc@varishangout.net I'm going to be real, every time I see this girl I confuse her with Kirito's dumb GGO avatar.

I don't have the time to waste on "giving chances" to SAO.

@DarkMahesvara@varishangout.net @bowlingc@varishangout.net This may be a little sacrilege to post here, but I can't get into Mushoku Tensei either. I tried, I read the WN all the way to a little under halfway through the series and watched quite a bit of the anime, but it never fully clicked. It's certainly better written than most isekai, and I do fully get the appeal, but a decent amount of arcs ending with the poor man's trope of letting the main character run away from his problems until the author settles on a conclusion never sat right with me. I will at least give the series massive congratulations for having an actual ending. The amount of authors working on LN and manga that seem to have decided on no real plan for ending the series is staggering, and leads to a lot of trash.

@DarkMahesvara@varishangout.net @bowlingc@varishangout.net @rainignterror1080p@varishangout.net I do like the pre-official Alfheim Sinon designs that Infinity Moment and Hollow Fragment put her in. It's cute.
@Iffine@varishangout.net @bowlingc@varishangout.net Reki is good at writing stories when Kirito is not involved. Yuki is consistently a fan favorite for a reason. Alternative is okay but he's struggles to tell a story about video games without putting some threat of death pushing it forward and that story might not have needed it.

@supersid333@varishangout.net @Iffine@varishangout.net @bowlingc@varishangout.net Its hard to take it serious when some character get her ass handed to her by a monster and gary sue & co are all super dramatic "OH NOES WE HAVE TO SAVE HER
" when you know their just in a game without without any stakes. In reality the party would have called her a noob and laughed at her for sucking.
