There will be the typical harassment like with Dolphin, but devs will probably come back eventually. You can't judge the state of console emulator development when the console is still sold. It also depends how many good games were released. Which is something I have no idea about.

Sure, there was still LAN (As a second thought, with plenty problems on average), sure there were profiles/accounts/gamercards where you could build clubs of "friends", but the writing was on the wall already when you *had* to play in a big server with strangers to fill up the quota of 16/32 players, even if you actually managed to bring your whole squad along, nevermind going duo/trio. I remember clear as day game site reviewers lamenting the death of LAN parties and users saying they were thrown into servers with weird Latinos/Eastern Europeans and having miserable experiences.

Of course, Steam was about to throw a wrench into their plans and demolish the entire industry in the process, but it didn't start because of Linux (Which noone took seriously as a game platform in the late 2000s), it's just that developers didn't want to optimize for PCs, and Microsoft wanted to get Microsoft gamers into the 360 to milk them from a dual Windows + 360 point of view. Piracy was largely an excuse, since people that couldn't afford 60$ games + DLCs were unlikely to afford game consoles + paid online + 60$ games + DLCs

That was the goal, and it worked. It's better to make a sacrificial Steam account, but you can. Hell, there's people that add to themselves entire products by cracking the Steam ecosystem. Never tried it myself, but I know it happens. The whole scene went underground, but only because most of the userbase had already been entrapped into a closed ecosystem, and they weren't willing to do the cracking if it meant they had to give up playing with non-cracking friends. I'm not saying that piracy was entirely a non-concern, but it came second place compared to wallgardening the ecosystem. Defeating piracy (Which they didn't defeat, as it became apparent when even the PS3 was finally jailbreaked) was largely a rouse under which moving the userbase into a closed ecosystem was envisioned.
