i mean, the luty gun is so functionally horrible that a brazilian in a cave can probably cobble together something slightly better. but for just a normal lad with no gun design experience whatsoever the work of philip luty was to set a precedent, anyone can cobble togheter a mostly working automatic gun with some tools and spare steel pipe, so no the luty ain't cringe, it is just crap.
