Roof made of overlapped planks, almost like a rafter and shingle in one, is a neat concept. I'm so used to seeing the horizontal style where a "course" of shingles is laid on top of another. I'm guessing this style is more durable but much more of a pain to repair. I'm sure there's something else, besides the obvious material needs and thermal barriers, that determined why we moved to modern style roofing.

Wrath Of Gnon
We ought to teach our children to build. Here's a solid log playhouse built by four very young brothers in 1890. Pine, riven pine board roof, smoke opening for the fieldstone hearth inside. You can't tell from the photos but it is tiny. Currently in a Stockholm open air museum.

Zoning requirements are the most incorrectly used things around.
Instead of being to used to corral certain populations, zoning laws just give petty power to stupid boomers.
So basically zoning laws end up being fake and gay like HOA's.

Yes exactly. People can't build houses on their properties in a lot of areas because of township trustee rules, but they can build "barns" because state laws still favor the home farmer and any attempt to retcon these is slapped down (rightfully) as anti-farmer. So you end up with "barndominoums" now, where people build a huge pole barn and then do whatever TF they want inside of it (literally turning it into a house lol, get bent township). I think the BANTS concept is older than industrial society, but we often don't hear about it. After all, why would they want people to know that petty rebellion is good and useful?

This reminds me of the old straw houses made out of bales that were stacked and eventually covered in thick paint and plaster. Except this is better because it's extremely neat and less messy, and you're unlikely to have some of the same issues like animals eating your house.

I wonder how expensive they are. Gotta be pricey, but the convenience might make it worthwhile. As hard as it is to find decent lumber anymore, this might be good and I say that as a guy who hates osb.

this site sounds AI generated but claims it's about 30% cheaper than traditional construction at 100-150 USD per square foot.
I found another video where the CEO of this company shows off his own block house in Belgium. Looks like he put vinyl siding on the outside and took off some panels from some of the blocks to run power and plumbing. Says it takes 4-6 months to finish which is about half of traditional prefab houses. https://youtu.be/BBPHQ9V29Bk?si=JysqImf97rV22bME&t=626

Sophomoric jokes aside, this is actually cool. I wish these goobers wouldn't gatekeep their pricing. Nothing makes me lose interest faster than not knowing what something costs.

Okay, I input a quick 1500 square foot square house with some bay windows and 4 doors and this is what it gave me. That's actually really neat.

assuming that $40k for structure plus $15k for plumbing and another $15k for electrical that's a $70k house. Compare that with the national average of $150k for materials and tools on a house that size with traditional construction. That's actually really amazing.

Not to mention a ton of that can be DIY. Plumbing can be DIY to an extent, especially with how simple PEX is today. They have the ratcheting PEX clamps now that don't require you to squeeze a copper ring with the big bolt cutter looking tool. You can easily install a dual zone ductless heat pump yourself for cooling and light heat, and a rocket mass heater for keeping things warm in the cold half of the year.
