Relying on the Mexican government/military to kill the cartels is a fool's errand. The US military might've been able to do it back in the day, but I hear they're pretty subverted by cartel elements now too.

I've heard of a few isolated cases of villages in Mexico taking up arms and fighting back against cartel scum.
