Unauthorised changes are treated as a breach of copyright in regards to moral/authorship rights, the entity previously given the loicence cannot demand compensation for termination and needs to pay remaining royalty dues. They can contest this in court but not the act of termination itself - since it's in author's domain alone (however there's a caveat, author has to demand a fix first and said demand must be ignored). However even minor changes can be grounds for termination (generally in regards to narrative works, technical changes are fine but a change of meaning would be very objectionable).

Even then, keeping the original line and adding a parenthetical explanation is probably how it should be done, iirc some older releases did that.

It comes down to how you see translation, I guess: either as a transformative, standalone work or merely a tool to convey meaning in another language.

Instead of trying to polish a turd they essentially just made a shitpost. Don't pay attention to the synopsis or genres it anything like that or you'll have a bad time. It's really a comedy of sorts. I haven't seen it but about the 5 minutes I watched last night ensuring I had everything setup correctly had me laughing my ass off. It seems to be a slow start. Second half seems to be where they just have up on the story completely and went balls to the wall with shitposting. Seems like the second half is going to be better than the first half.

Making the rewrite the main product is a shit move because it would disrespect the creator who made it. Even then, some of the more amusing memes come from the author's own mistakes, and any good author would take light jabs like those with jest. Better off signing myself up on #TeamLiteralTranslation .

I heard the line was actually supposed to be: "You live only once and when you die, that's it, it's over." Even then I could be wrong, but as meme-worthy that other line is, the people who did the subs could have a better job. It's one of the reasons why I haven't played that visual novel with the translation on, I fear they didn't get it right. I know it's a mess on both ends not only on the translation, but of Nasu's 'prose'
