It also gave the people a chance to actually vote on the war itself, with a pro-war president going up against a pro-peace candidate. Ukraine has been forced on an insane "fight to the last drop of Christian, Slav blood" policy ever since the war began, with NO input or correction from the people. And as users here have helpfully pointed out, Zelensky's only form of democratic legitimacy comes from him running as a peace candidate.
