@p@fsebugoutzone.org i'm looking for something. some sort of, custom remote control for a computer? can you help me figure out what it would be called? i want this thing for doing things like reading books on my laptop. right now i'm using this presentation pointer, see pic. but it doesn't have enough buttons. it's no problem to rebind buttons because you can do it in the obvious way. but there aren't enough of them. some ideas i have would be to look for 1. smart tv remote controls 2. game pads what do you think?

@fluffy@fsebugoutzone.org > 2. game pads Probably your best bet. The X11 joystick driver (originally designed as an accessibility system) would get you what you want, more or less, probably; you can map it to mouse/keyboard events. Like, attached is what I am using for the DevTerm. If that kind of solution works for you, then you can grab a Wiimote. Should have enough buttons, maybe you can figure out how to map gestures, I don't know. Otherwise a PS3/PS4 controller definitely does, but I think a Wiimote is one-handed, right, and enough buttons.

Would this work with any joystick? Like, if I wanted to do something silly like use a thrustmaster as a mouse, could I do so?

@echo@detroitriotcity.com @fluffy@fsebugoutzone.org > Would this work with any joystick? Yeah, as long as it speaks like a normal /dev/input/eventX device. > Like, if I wanted to do something silly like use a thrustmaster as a mouse, could I do so? Yeah, check the config file, you can more or less see how it works.

@p@fsebugoutzone.org @echo@detroitriotcity.com wiimote seems like a good idea. bluetooth, well-supported, widely available. still. it doesn't offer that much additional functionality. on my pointer i have 5 buttons, the wiimote has about ten? i'd like something i can at least do basic mouse movements with. but the idea was good. i got to searching for "one handed game controllers". truns out there are VR controllers. check out this doohicky with the trackball
@fluffy@fsebugoutzone.org @p@fsebugoutzone.org wiimote has motion controls for the pointer though. it is even more convenient than a trackball in some circumstances

@tribune@fsebugoutzone.org @fluffy@fsebugoutzone.org Does that work when used as a regular device when you try to get the Linux to talk to it?

@p@fsebugoutzone.org @tribune@fsebugoutzone.org rather than solder in an LED, isn't there some minimal product with a light that i could tape on? right now i bought some glow-in-the-dark tape but annoyingly it's only good for a couple hours in the dark

@fluffy@fsebugoutzone.org @tribune@fsebugoutzone.org I don't know of something like that; I mean, if phosphorescent tape doesn't work for long enough, you'd probably need a battery, and probably easier to tap into the battery on the device than to affix another one. If you're using a Wiimote, you could just wear IR goggles, it uses an IR beam.

@romin@shitposter.world @p@fsebugoutzone.org @fluffy@fsebugoutzone.org @tribune@fsebugoutzone.org You can even use two tv remotes or two candles in place of the bar, it works
