Ah, true. They bought Nokia too. In the past.
They didn't buy SEGA because they didn't want to but I'm sure they tried to buy SEGA before producing the xbox. Didn't they try to buy Nintendo too? I'm not kidding

@Natsura@fedi.absturztau.be Yeah. And it wasn't a polite decline either. They basically laughed at their face.

1) Microsoft buys Discord
2) Microsoft makes it worse, like it always does
3) People move to Mumble
Sounds like a great plan to me. 3rd step might go wrong though

@vyivel@fedi.absturztau.be I don't think they are going to make it any better or worse. They will probably integrate it with their xbox platform and have it as a global platform for communication across all Microsoft devices. But other than that, I don't think it's going to be any different from what it is now.

@enigmatico@fedi.absturztau.be >Integrate it with their Xbox platform
Forcing its users to use a Microsoft account as a result, I presume. That's making it worse in my book.
In any case I'm biased because fuck monopolies, they're objectively cringe

@vyivel@fedi.absturztau.be It's not like Discord is very privacy focused. I don't think it's going to make a huge difference if you use a Microsoft account or not. It's going to be data mined either way, the only difference is where that data goes.

@enigmatico@fedi.absturztau.be True. I'm just still a bit salty they did it with Minecraft, even if I don't play it much anymore

@vyivel@fedi.absturztau.be It could be worse.
Imagine if you could only play on Bedrock edition.

Here's the question though: who would you rather have bought Discord: Microsoft, Facebook or Google?

@scarlet@neckbeard.xyz Pffff... I'm already using Whatsapp though but I really don't like the idea of using anything owned by Facebook.
At least with Microsoft I don't care that much, since I'm already using their OS anyways.
Google... I have mixed feeling about Google.

@scarlet@neckbeard.xyz The problem is that Microsoft already owns Linkedin, which is a social network for "professional" people looking for jobs and stuff.
And Discord is a "casual" chat for gamers.
So they know where you work, what games you play, and now they also know what chatrooms you frequently use and the memes you post.
Bad mixture.

Still not even close to half as bad as Google or Facebook. Remember, most the money Microsoft made and is making is from selling software, not selling data and ads. They're still less predatory about your data than the other two giants.
I'm not crazy about Microsoft either, because of lots of things, but I'm not scared of them. Meanwhile, I'm definitely scared of what Facebook and Google are doing already.

@scarlet@neckbeard.xyz Selling? You can use Windows 10 even if you don't have a license key, it will just put a watermark on top of the screen, but that's it.
