Dracula (1931), proof that you can produce a timeless classic with virtually no special effects. Plus, I've always really liked the character of Abraham Van Helsing.

I'm still kind of disappointed that many Westerners still can't separate the mythical Dracula from the historical Vlad Dracula.

He is still very much celebrated in Romania, even under Soviet occupation the ruling Communist Party had a paramilitary wing called "The Vlad Tepes League."
